Start with the date
Count back from the day you need the garage done: the day you hand over keys, the day the photographer comes, or the day the movers arrive. Most garages that have not been touched in years need more than one weekend, so give yourself a few weeks if you can. If you cannot, skip ahead to the shorter plan at the bottom.
Four weeks out: decide and measure
- Decide the goal. Moving means everything you keep gets packed. Selling the house means the garage should look clear and usable. The goals are different, so the sort is different.
- Walk it with a notepad. Note the biggest items, anything that looks broken or unsafe, and anything you already know you will not take.
- Find your heavy trash day. If you live in the City of Houston, curbside heavy trash is only collected every other month, so look up your day now. More on that below.
- Book the outside help now. Donation drop-offs and hauler pickups fill up near month-end and on weekends. If you want a hauler, we can schedule one for you through our Sweep add-on.
Three weeks out: sort in four piles
Empty one section at a time and put every item in a pile: Save, Share, Sell, or Sweep. Our garage guide walks through this in detail. A few rules help when time is short:
- If you have not used it in two years and it is not tied to a memory, it is not moving with you.
- Do not buy new bins yet. Sort first and count what is actually staying.
- Anything that needs special handling gets set aside right away: paint, solvents, pesticides, propane, and batteries.
Two weeks out: move the piles out
- Share: drop off donations and keep the receipts. Call first about what the charity accepts. Our donation guide covers how to check.
- Sell: list the items worth $50 or more now so they have time to sell. See how to sell household items locally.
- Sweep: schedule the haul-away for the week before your deadline so you have time to fix anything that comes up.
Houston heavy trash timing
For eligible City of Houston addresses, heavy trash is collected every other month, up to six times a year, and each address has its own collection day. You can look yours up on the City's service lookup tool or in the HTX Collects app. Set items out behind the curb between 6 p.m. the Friday before your day and 7 a.m. on the day, with up to 8 cubic yards per set-out. It takes furniture, mattresses, bikes, and many appliances, but not electronics, paint, chemicals, or construction debris. If your deadline falls between pickups, you may need a hauler instead. Outside the City of Houston, check your own city, MUD, or county for its rules.
One week out: pack or put back
If you are moving, pack what is left like any other room: label boxes by where they will go in the new place, and keep a box of things you will need on day one close at hand. Our packing guide has the steps. If you are selling, put back only what earns its spot, label the bins, and leave a clear path to the door and around the walls.
Final days: the finishing pass
- Sweep or blow out the floor and wipe down shelves.
- Check corners, rafters, and the back of shelving for items you missed.
- Take a few photos of the clear garage. They are handy for a listing and for your own records.
Short on time?
If your deadline is days away rather than weeks, do the work in this order: pull out and set aside anything unsafe, sort into four piles, book the hauler and drop-offs, then pack or put back. Skip the selling step unless you have a few high-value items, since listings take time.
Want a hand?
This is the kind of job we do. Send a few photos of the garage and the date you are working toward, and we will reply with the hours we expect. See our pricing for how jobs are booked and what is included.
