Start with the new space, not the old one
Before touching a single box, find out what the new place can hold. Measure rooms, closets, and storage, and note the furniture you plan to bring. That number is your target. Everything gets sorted against what fits, not against how much you have.
Give yourself time
A whole house takes longer than people expect. If you can, work in short sessions over several weeks rather than a few exhausting weekends. Aim for one room or one category at a time, and stop while you still have energy.
Start with the easy rooms
Begin with spaces that carry the least emotion: the garage, a guest room, the hall closet. Easy decisions build momentum and give you a sense of how much is leaving. Save photos, papers, and keepsakes for later, when you are in the rhythm.
Use four piles
- Save: what goes to the new home. It should be organized, labeled, and easy to reach.
- Share: items for family, friends, or charity. Our donation guide helps match items to places.
- Sell: worthwhile items. See how to sell locally.
- Sweep: broken, unusable, or expired items to be hauled away.
For Houston-area options on where each pile can go, including Habitat ReStore, City heavy trash pickup, and the Environmental Service Centers, see our donation guide.
Handle sentimental items kindly
These are the hardest, and there is no wrong pace for them. A few approaches that help:
- Keep the best, not the most. Choose a few pieces that carry the memory rather than keeping the whole collection.
- Take a photo. A picture can hold the memory of something you cannot take with you.
- Pass things on. Offer items to family and friends, and tell them the story behind each one.
- Use a maybe box. Tape it shut and write the date on it. If you have not opened it in a few months, you have your answer.
Involve family early
If relatives may want certain pieces, ask them early and set a date. A short list with a deadline avoids a pile of "maybe someone wants this" items that never moves.
Pack what stays
Once the sorting is done, pack by room and label by where the box will go in the new place. Our packing guide has the steps. Keep an essentials box with you on moving day.
A note on timing
Move the Share, Sell, and Sweep piles out as you go, not at the end. Leaving everything until the last week turns downsizing back into a mountain.
